  • Thinking of our Yr 7s as they commence their AQE tests

    Fri 19 Nov 2021

We are all thinking about our Yr7s as they sit their first AQE tomorrow. They have all worked so hard and we know they will give their best.

Our mantra at Moneyrea is, “I can and I will do my best”. The amazing thing about giving one's best is something which every child can achieve; no one is left out.

We are proud of all of our Yr7s and know that they have an abundance of skills and talents that will help them to lead happy and fulfilled lives both now and in the future.

Our children know that this exam is just one small step on their life journey and that their performance in AQE/GL will not define them as a person or determine their future success or happiness.

Mums and dads we are thinking about you as well: we know that you are anxious for your children. Stay calm and keep reassuring your little pride and joys. They need to know that in school and at home nothing changes, because of a test.

    Some obvious stuff (sorry) ....

Have a planned, relaxed evening together with your child.
    Normal bedtime routine.
Have uniform all laid out and ready for the morning
    Pencils, rubber, exam card.
No fluffy toys or cards for the exam room ... they are distractions.
    Set a couple of alarms.
Make sure there’s petrol in the car.
Have a little breakfast to get the brain going.
Plan to arrive in good time at the AQE centre.
Don't hang around with them, reassure them and go have a coffee.
    It's all about minimizing fuss!

    Some final words you can share with them;

Encourage them to embrace the test and rise to the challenge, this is what you have been working so hard for.
Remind them not to engage in silly, excitable behaviour before going into the exam room .... calm and settled is the name of the game. A few calming breaths will help.
Before the test begins repeat our mantra, 'I can and I will do my best.'
Remind them that this test will be more of the same; there will be no surprises.
There will be 'monster questions', they know about them; leave them quickly and move on, there are lots of easier questions ahead.
Remain on task for every second of the test.
    Leave no blanks.
Read the question carefully and look out for key terms like: underline, circle, phrase with three words, in the first paragraph etc.
Watch out for any change in units; maybe the question is in cm but the answer is in metres.
If unsure; eliminate the impossible answers and choose between the possible.
Show your working out for all your maths. This allows the children and the examiner to check work and is more accurate than working out in your head.
Spell as best you can at all times; remember this is not a spelling test!
Check through the test, if you have time, and find your mistakes before the marker does. This is the game! Finding and correcting a mistake is the best feeling ever!

Do your very best and be proud of your effort. You can give nothing more than your best.
We love you, fullstop! (oops exclamation mark)

To help the children prepare for tomorrrow, they have enjoyed a really relaxing day as scientists making rockets with Miss Daly and the Yr7 CAs. How cool is that?

    (sounds a bit like Messi)

After being spotted playing for Rosario Football Club, former pupil Mea Mezza was invited to trials and has now been accepted into the Northern Ireland U16 squad.

We are very proud of Mea’s achievements and know she will put her heart and soul into this new opportunity.
