The achievements of pupils from Derryboy Primary School and Moneyrea Primary School were celebrated at a special presentation event in the Stormont Great Hall, kindly sponsored by Michelle McIlveen MLA. The occasion recognised the children’s recent success in their Highland Dance examinations, marking an important milestone in their cultural and artistic development.

Certificates and badges were formally presented by Michelle McIlveen MLA and William Olphert, Director of Education in the Ulster-Scots Agency, whose support for the promotion of Ulster-Scots heritage continues to be deeply valued.

We extend sincere thanks to the Michelle Johnston School of Highland Dance, whose expert tuition and encouragement prepared the pupils so well for their exams.

Special Presentations

The event also provided an opportunity to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to Highland Dance and Ulster-Scots culture:

• Michelle Shilliday — received a celebration cake marking 20 years of dedicated involvement in promoting Scottish Highland Dancing.
• Dr Judith Harper — recognised ahead of her retirement as Principal of Derryboy PS in June, in appreciation of her sterling commitment to Ulster-Scots culture and heritage within the school community.
• Mr Roy Greer — accepted the prestigious designation of Ulster-Scots Flagship School on behalf of Moneyrea PS, acknowledging the school’s leadership in cultural education.

Reflections on Cultural Identity

During the proceedings, William Olphert delivered a short but thoughtful address on the importance of children developing a strong sense of cultural identity and gaining an understanding of the Ulster-Scots tongue. His remarks highlighted the value of heritage as a living, shared experience that enriches both school life and the wider community.

The pupils then delighted the audience with three Highland dances, including a traditional sword dance, demonstrating both their skill and their enthusiasm for the art form.
